A 5kVA hybrid solar system is the sweet spot for most Lagos households: it runs lights, fans, a fridge, a television, laptops and a small pumping machine through a full night without the generator ever coming on. The confusion is not whether it works — it is why one quote says ₦3.2m and the next says ₦6.8m for what looks like the same job.

The difference is almost never the inverter. It is the battery chemistry, the panel wattage, and the four installation line items that quotes routinely leave out until the installer is already on your roof.

The component breakdown

For a 5kVA hybrid inverter paired with 5kWh–10kWh of usable storage, expect the split below at 2026 Lagos market prices.

  • Hybrid inverter (5kVA/48V, MPPT built in): ₦850,000 – ₦1,400,000 depending on brand and warranty length.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4) storage, 5kWh: ₦1,300,000 – ₦1,900,000. Tubular batteries are cheaper up front but cost more per usable cycle.
  • Solar panels, 6–8 × 550W monocrystalline: ₦900,000 – ₦1,350,000.
  • Mounting rails, clamps and roof penetration kit: ₦180,000 – ₦320,000.
  • Cabling, breakers, surge protection, changeover and combiner box: ₦250,000 – ₦450,000.

The costs quotes hide

Four items show up after the deposit is paid on badly scoped jobs. Insist that every one of them appears on the quote in writing before you commit.

  • Roof reinforcement or re-sheeting where the existing roof cannot carry the array.
  • Distribution board rewiring to separate essential from non-essential loads — this is what stops your air conditioner draining the battery at 2am.
  • Earthing and lightning protection, which is not optional on the Lagos coastal strip.
  • Scaffolding, crane hire or a second labour day on storey buildings.

What you should budget

A properly installed 5kVA lithium system in Lagos lands between ₦4.2m and ₦5.6m in 2026, fully commissioned. Anything materially below that range is usually cutting battery capacity, using recycled cells, or leaving the installation items above for you to discover later.

Ask for a load audit before the quote. A provider who tells you your system size without walking your house and listing your appliances is guessing, and you will pay for the guess.

Rainwater harvesting: a practical guide for Nigerian rooftops

Southern Nigeria receives between 1,500mm and 3,000mm of rain a year. A 100 square metre roof in Lagos can capture roughly 150,000 litres annually — far more than a family of five uses for washing, flushing and cleaning. The constraint is never rainfall. It is storage and filtration.

Sizing your system

Multiply your roof's footprint in square metres by annual rainfall in metres, then by 0.8 for run-off losses. That is your yield. Size your tank for the longest dry stretch you want to bridge — in the South West that is roughly 90 dry-season days, so a household using 400 litres a day needs meaningful storage or a top-up source.

  • Gutters: 125mm half-round minimum, with leaf guards on compounds with trees.
  • First-flush diverter: 20 litres per 100m² of roof, discarding the dirtiest initial run-off.
  • Storage: 5,000L–20,000L, opaque and sealed. Translucent tanks grow algae.

Filtration that makes water potable

Harvested rainwater is safe for laundry, flushing and irrigation with basic screening. For drinking, you need a treatment train, not a single filter.

  • Leaf screen and first-flush diverter at the inlet.
  • Sediment cartridge (20 micron, then 5 micron).
  • Activated carbon block for taste, odour and organics.
  • UV steriliser or chlorine dosing as the final barrier.

The maintenance schedule

Systems fail from neglect, not design. Keep this rhythm and the water stays clean.

  • Monthly: clear gutters and check the first-flush chamber drains fully.
  • Quarterly: replace sediment cartridges; inspect tank seals and mosquito screens.
  • Every six months: replace carbon block; test UV lamp output.
  • Annually: drain, scrub and disinfect the tank before the rains begin.

A complete domestic system — gutters, diverter, 10,000L tank, pump, four-stage filtration and UV — typically lands between ₦900,000 and ₦2.1m installed, depending on tank size and whether your gutters need replacing. Payback against borehole diesel and sachet water is usually two to four years.

How a Lekki estate cut generator hours by 71%

Forty-two units, eleven weeks and the sequencing decisions that made it work.

A 42-unit gated estate off Lekki-Epe Expressway was running two 100kVA generators an average of 14.5 hours a day, burning roughly ₦9.4m of diesel a month across the service charge. Eleven weeks later that figure was 4.2 hours a day. Nothing exotic was installed. The order of the work is what made the difference.

Weeks 1–2: measure before you buy

Smart meters went on both generator feeds and on eight representative units. Two findings reshaped the entire scope: 38% of night-time load came from air conditioners left running in empty rooms, and the estate's borehole pump was cycling far more often than needed because of an undersized pressure tank.

Neither of those is a solar problem. Fixing them first cut the system the estate needed to buy by nearly a third.

Weeks 3–5: demand reduction

The cheapest kilowatt-hour is the one nobody uses.

  • All common-area lighting converted to LED with motion sensors in stairwells and the car park.
  • Borehole pressure tank upsized and the pump put on a timer aligned to solar hours.
  • Per-unit sub-metering installed so residents saw their own consumption rather than a shared bill.

Weeks 6–9: shared solar and storage

A 60kWp rooftop array across three blocks fed a 100kWh lithium bank supplying common areas, the borehole, the gatehouse and a rationed essentials circuit into each unit. Units that wanted full-house backup added their own inverter tied into the same array through a metered connection.

The essentials circuit was the key political decision. It gave every household a guaranteed baseline without requiring all 42 owners to agree on one system size.

Weeks 10–11: commissioning and behaviour

Generators were retained as the third fallback, not decommissioned. Residents received a one-page guide and a monthly consumption ranking. Competitive pride did more for the last 6% of savings than any hardware.

The numbers

Generator runtime fell from 14.5 to 4.2 hours a day, a 71% reduction. Monthly diesel dropped from ₦9.4m to ₦2.7m. Total project cost was ₦86m, funded from reserves and a two-year service-charge levy, giving a payback of just under 13 months. Maintenance costs on both generators also fell sharply because they stopped running at low load.

Choosing eco materials that survive the harmattan

Sustainable material choices imported wholesale from European guides fail in Nigeria for one reason: the harmattan. Three months of dry, dust-laden air with wide day-night temperature swings will crack, warp or dust-clog anything specified for a temperate climate.

What performs well

These materials combine low embodied carbon with genuine local durability.

  • Compressed stabilised earth blocks (CSEB): excellent thermal mass, locally produced, needs a good roof overhang and a breathable render.
  • Bamboo, properly treated: strong and fast-growing, but only with borax treatment and no ground contact.
  • Recycled aluminium roofing: high reflectivity, long life, fully recyclable at end of life.
  • Lime-based renders: breathable, self-healing hairline cracks, far kinder to earth walls than cement.
  • Laterite-cement composite floors: cool underfoot, hard-wearing, minimal transport emissions.

What disappoints

Not every green label survives contact with the climate.

  • Untreated softwood cladding: splits within two dry seasons.
  • Straw-based insulation panels: moisture cycling and termite pressure make them a liability.
  • Thin recycled-plastic composite decking: warps badly under direct Nigerian sun.
  • Standard cement render over earth walls: traps moisture and spalls off in sheets.

Design decisions that matter more than materials

Deep overhangs, cross-ventilation, light-coloured roofs and shaded west-facing walls will do more for comfort and running cost than any single material swap. Get the envelope right first, then specify materials that can survive it.

Ask providers for photographs of work they completed at least three years ago. Anything that has been through three harmattans and still looks right is a better reference than a product datasheet.

Six documents that separate a real business from an expensive mistake.

Most solar, water and green-build disappointments in Nigeria are not technical failures. They are business failures: the installer disappears, the warranty is unenforceable, or nobody can be held responsible when a component fails in month seven.

These six documents filter out the majority of that risk before you pay a naira.

The six documents

  • CAC registration certificate with the company's status confirmed as active — the name on it must match the account you are paying into.
  • Tax identification number and a recent tax clearance, which proves the business has an operating history rather than a week-old name.
  • Proof of technical competence: relevant certification for the trade, plus named engineers rather than a company-level claim.
  • Public liability insurance covering work on your property, with the policy period covering your installation dates.
  • A written warranty specifying what is covered, for how long, and who honours it — the installer, the distributor or the manufacturer.
  • Two contactable references from jobs completed at least twelve months ago, with photographs and addresses you can verify.

Red flags

Refusal to provide any of the six is decisive. So are these three patterns: a demand for full payment up front, a personal bank account instead of a corporate one, and a quote with no itemised bill of materials.

Households that install smart metering and actually look at the data typically cut consumption by 12–20% within three months, before spending anything on generation. The meter does not save the energy — visibility changes behaviour, and behaviour saves the energy.

What to measure

Whole-house consumption alone tells you very little. Circuit-level monitoring is what makes the data actionable.

  • Main incomer, so you can see total draw and compare against your grid or generator hours.
  • Air conditioning circuit — almost always the largest single load in a Nigerian home.
  • Water heating and pumping.
  • Kitchen circuit, where freezers and old fridges hide.
  • Standby load at 3am, which reveals what is drawing power while everyone sleeps.

How often to look

Daily for the first fortnight to find the surprises, then weekly. Real-time dashboards are useful for diagnosis but exhausting as a habit. A weekly summary with a comparison against the previous week is what sustains attention past month two.

  • Set air conditioners to 24–25°C and use timers rather than leaving them running in unoccupied rooms. This alone is usually half the total saving.
  • Shift pumping, laundry and ironing into solar or grid hours so the battery and generator never carry them.
  • Hunt down the 3am baseline. Old freezers, always-on decoders and failing fridge seals routinely account for 200–400W around the clock.
